ReplyDeleteWhat do you plan on doing with your survey results? Are you going to start extra curricular activities at your school? Are you going to start programs to get them involved?
Very interested in where this is going! In middle school, the 6th graders are not allowed to compete in school sports and I wish for from the grade standpoint they would be able too! Extra curricular activities seem to keep kids grade conscious.

Thanks so much for your comment, Heather! I plan to use the survey results and compare them to the PEIMS data to determine if we are making it possible for all 4th and 5th grade students to participate. My project is based on the assumption that we are only meeting the needs of students that come from more affluent families. If the research show this assumption to be true, I will make suggestions for changes to the current activities and for the addition of new activities. Suggestion for changes might include running a late bus for students that cannot have parents pick them up later, etc. The activities we currently have are choir, dynamic drummers, cardio club, art club, culture club, library assistants, KC club and the announcement broad cast club.

Also, even if you know what you plan on doing with your results, how will you implement any changes to who participates in extra-curricular activities? One more question: What is the problem in your action research?
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised that 4th and 5th grade are the focus with this topic. How many extra-curricular activities are available to students of that age in your school? In my experience, such activities for that age group are very limited.
ReplyDeleteIf your goal is to encourage involvement of all students in programs outside the classroom, how is your research going to help in achieving that? Will you consider development of additional extracurricular activities?

ReplyDeleteI am interested to read your results. So, is the problem that more affluent students have access to extracurricular activities that the non affluent students?
How many students are you going to include in your action research? Are the extra-curricular activities geared towards one gender or designed to be neutral?
Personally, I do not think there is a correlation between students who participate in extra-curricular activities and their ethnicity, gender and socio-economic make up. I think it depends on what the students are interested in.
I am interested to read your results.
